In addition to our online shop, WASUIAN also has a physical store next to the head office in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, where you can see, feel, and try on all of our products. And here is the question we often receive both online and in-store, regardless of the season.

What should I wear under my samue?
You can wear anything that you think suits you and your samue.

We think this is a question that many of our customers have, so we would like to help out in this blog. Our answer is quite simple, yet reasonable.

Samue are clothes with more freedom that are not bound by old customs, so there is no problem with wearing them however you like.

For example, in the hot and humid season, you can wear a short-sleeved T-shirt, a sleeveless tank top, or just the samue itself, and you will still be comfortable.

The model in the photo above is wearing the “1095 Omi Chijimi Hon'asa (Pure Ramie) Samue” on its own. Ability of ramie fabric is to absorb and dissipate moisture, and the temperature controlling properties of ramie make it the best of all natural fibers, so you can fully enjoy these aspects by wearing it without any special undergarment.

Cool Samue and Jinbei are Stylish Countermeasures Against the Heat

Our ancestors devised various ways to cool off, such as using wind chimes, sudare (bamboo screens), gyozui (running water), and uchimizu (sprinkled water). Wearing appropriate garments was also one way to feel cool. Why don't you try our cool and refreshing samue and jinbei to spend the hot seasons in comfort?

Also, in the chilly seasons of autumn and winter, many customers wear long-sleeved T-shirts or sweaters (including turtlenecks) under their samue.

Here is a photo sent by one of our customers. It looks like he is wearing a black turtleneck under the Thick Yarn Sashiko-ori Samue” which is the standard winter samue at WASUIAN. The neck area is wrapped up, giving a clean impression. Additionally, some people also wear “suteteko” or tights under their trousers.

WASUIAN’s samue are designed to be worn with the front facing out, so even if you wear something under your samue, the original silhouette will not change that much. It's nice to be able to stay warm without looking like you're wearing too much clothing, like you would with Western-style clothes. Here is our staff photo. He likes to wear samue with a hoodie.

Introducing traditional stich-weaving

[Fabric Collection] The Wisdom of Our Predecessors in Life. Japanese artisans who carry out the weaving of history and tradition carefully and meticulously finish each of the items sold at WASUIAN, including samue, haori, hanten, bags, and other items made of sashiko-ori.

“Samue Underwear” for those who are serious about authentic Japanese clothing

There are also many people who want to wear Japanese clothing properly, with the collar straight. For those customers, WASUIAN offers two types of underwear.

1.Samue-style Underwear

This is original Japanese-style underwear from WASUIAN that has not been seen much in the world until now. It is the same type as the samue with four strings, and you can wear it neatly with the collar properly aligned.

We have sizes from M to LL available for each. For more details, please go to the product page.

2. T-shirt Type Juban

We also have an easy-to-wear T-shirt-style half-juban with a soft and comfortable texture. It is made from 100% cotton with excellent sweat-absorbing properties, so we have received feedback saying that it is “the best inner wear.”

The collar is cut to match the front fastening of the samue, and it is made from high-quality polyester called “Toray Sillok.” This Sillok has a supple sheen and is stain-resistant, antistatic, water-repellent and oil-repellent. The collar is made with Velcro, so you can adjust the opening of the chest depending on how you layer it.

The main color is white, and there are five collar colors to choose from, in sizes M, L, and LL. For example, if you wear a black samue with a gray collar, it will look like this.

Please try out different combinations to suit your taste.

I hope I was able to convey that a samue is a garment that can be worn in a way that is comfortable for the person wearing it, and that it looks stylish when worn with a matching collar.

We hope you will continue discovering your own ”Samue Style.”
